Auto accidents can cause many serious injuries.  At Sarasota Chiropractic, Physical Therapy & Massage in Sarasota, FL, we offer you the best natural and non-invasive care available.  Understanding what the most serious car accident injuries are, how to identify their symptoms and how to treat them can help you if you are ever involved in an auto accident.

The most common injuries occurring after a car wreck include:

Neck Injuries

Neck strain is commonly called whiplash.  Although it is most commonly associated with car accidents, any impact or blow that causes your head to jerk backward or forward can cause a neck strain.  The sudden impact stretches and tears the muscles and tendons in your neck.

A traumatic brain injury can happen as a result of any force that fractures or penetrates the skull.  Over fifty percent of all reported traumatic brain injuries are the result of an auto accident.  Trauma to the brain can happen during an automobile accident when the skull strikes an object like a steering wheel or windshield.  There may or may not be an open fracture to the skull due to the accident, however this does not need to happen for a traumatic brain injury to occur.  In an auto accident the extreme force of the accident can cause the brain to collide against the internal hard surface of the skull.  This can cause bruising of the brain (contusion) and bleeding (brain hemorrhage) which may not be visible at the time of the injury.

Back Injuries

The back is separated into two distinct areas, thoracic vertebra (upper and middle back) and lumbar (lower back).  Each section of the spinal cord and its vertebra are surrounded by discs, ligaments, muscles, nerves and tendons.  When injured, they can cause varying degrees of pain, from mild to severe and the duration can range from temporary to permanent.  The thoracic spine connects to the ribs and chest.  Sprains and fractures commonly occur due to high impact auto accidents that could result in nerve damage.  The lumbar spine is made up of five vertebra and it relies on strong supporting muscles to remain stable.  Therefore a lumbar sprain or strain can compromise the integrity of the region.

A sprain involves damage to the ligaments, which connect bone to bone.

A strain involves damage to muscle or tendon fibers which connect muscle to bone.  This results in bruising, limited movement, swelling, tenderness and may severely compromise your ability to perform daily tasks.

Disc Injuries

In between the vertebra of your spine you have discs which act as cushions.  Each disc has a firm outer layer and a soft inner substance.  When the pressure exceeds what the outer layer can handle, the substance may escape, this is called a herniation.  Disc herniations may place pressure on the spinal cord or surrounding nerves.  Some common symptoms of disc herniations are sudden and intense pain, numbness and weakness in the upper or lower extremities.

Psychological Injuries

After an auto accident the driver and passengers may suffer mental and emotional injuries.  These injuries can include anger, anxiety, embarrassment, emotional distress, fear, humiliation and shock.  Mild mental and emotional symptoms may include a loss of appetite, lack of energy, mood swings, sleep disturbances, episodes of crying, sexual dysfunction and/or loss of interest in sex.  Severe mental and emotional injuries can cause acute stress disorder or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Chiropractic Care at Sarasota Chiropractic, Physical Therapy & More

Chiropractic care uses holistic means to provide pain relief to the head, neck and back.  The treatments increase blood flow to the injured area, relax muscles, reduce scar tissue damage and ease the mind of the patient.  These benefits help patients suffering from car accident injuries get back to normal.

Removing interference in the nervous system through the chiropractic adjustment, allows the brain to better communicate with the rest of the body.  This helps speed up the healing process and reduces the chances of complications.
