A rotator cuff tear is the most common shoulder injury after an accident. It results in stretching or tearing of the tendons and ligaments in the shoulder joint. The shoulder is made up of three separate joints and

Frozen shoulder: Frozen shoulder forms when an injury or overuse causes pain that limits the shoulder’s range of motion. It is most commonly caused by bursitis or a tear in the rotator cuff.

When you don’t move your shoulder much at all for many weeks, the tissue surrounding the shoulder joint shrinks and thickens. This results in an inability to stretch. Even limited movement causes pain. This causes you to avoid movement and as a result the joint capsule stiffens further.

Frozen shoulder takes months to develop. The treatment begins with exercises that stretch the joint capsule and then shifts to strengthening exercises later.

Recovery can take several months or longer. If you do not improve steadily, report back to your doctor or schedule with a shoulder expert. In rare cases, when conservative care fails it may require surgery.

Treatment for shoulder injury

If a broken bone or tear is suspected from the accident, don’t move the shoulder and stabilize it’s position. Seek medical attention immediately.

Shoulder injuries can be accurately diagnosed by an orthopedic specialist through imaging such as x-rays, CT scans and MRIs and through clinical evaluation.

The fix may be as simple as using a sling to immobilize the arm and rest the shoulder to reduce pain and promote healing.

Compression, elevation and ice aid the healing process. If a ligament, muscle or tendon is torn it may require surgery. In this case early diagnosis is key.

Shoulder pain can also be referred from your neck and this is why a chiropractic evaluation is essential.

Physical therapy exercises and stretches help balance the shoulder joint and promote stability.
