Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

Using digital imaging studies, physical exam tests, and personal history taking, our chiropractor in Sarasota frequently diagnoses the following conditions:

  • Shoulder dislocation: this happens when two articulating bones within the shoulder complex become partially or fully misaligned; common joints affected include the glenohumeral joint (the "ball and socket" connecting your upper arm bone to your shoulder blade) and the acromioclavicular or AC joint (where the collarbone connects to the bony top of your shoulder blade)
  • Shoulder bursitis and tendonitis: inflammation and irritation of fluid-filled bursae or tendons
  • Muscle, ligament, and/or labrum tears: inflammation and partial or full-thickness tears in these soft tissues, often as a result of repetitive damage or sudden overloading
  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis): gradual stiffening of the shoulder causing severe mobility limitations; this often follows a shoulder injury or infection

It's also not uncommon for shoulder pain to occur due to an issue within the cervical spine. For instance, whiplash and tech neck often present with sore, stiff, and achy shoulders. Nerve compression in the neck (radiculopathy) can also refer pain to the shoulder.

Why Shoulder Pain Happens

Your shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in your body. But all that movement requires highly coordinated action from many different tissues. Various genetic and environmental factors can throw off this coordination and lead to injury. Common risk factors for shoulder pain among our patients include:

  • Poor posture and ergonomics
  • Repeated movement, especially overhead (e.g., swimmers, carpenters, electricians, construction workers, etc.)
  • Traumatic incidents (e.g., auto accident, slip and fall, work injury, sports injury)
  • Overuse

  • Chiropractic adjustments: "reset" the nervous system to trigger pain relief and improve the rate of healing, plus restore normal shoulder and spinal alignment
  • Acupuncture and massage: increase local blood flow and reduce tissue tension
  • Corrective exercises: prescribed specifically to reduce swelling, improve range of motion, increase joint stability, and maximize joint strength
