In this episode of the Sarasota Chiropractic And Physical Therapy podcast, Dr. Kozma breaks down the fundamentals of ergonomics and why your daily posture and positioning matter more than most people realize.
Whether you’re working from a home office, sitting at a desk all day, or just going about your routine, small adjustments can make a big difference in how you feel over time.
Dr. Kozma offers actionable, easy-to-implement tips to help you reduce strain, prevent pain, and move through your day with greater comfort and confidence.
Hey, welcome back. I’m Doctor Kozma, and you’re listening to the Sarasota Chiropractic and Physical Therapy podcast — where we talk about real ways to help you feel better, move better, and get back to living the life you love here in Sarasota.
Today we’re talking about something that affects almost every single one of us, and honestly, most people never think about it until they’re already hurting. We’re talking about ergonomics — basically, how your body is positioned throughout your day. At your desk, on your couch, in your car. And here’s the thing — the small habits you build around how you sit, stand, and move can either protect your spine or slowly wear it down over time. So let’s get into it.
Now, the number one thing I see in my practice is what I call forward head posture. You’ve probably seen it — someone hunched over a screen, chin jutting forward, shoulders rounded. It looks uncomfortable because it is. For every inch your head drifts forward of your shoulders, the effective load on your neck more than doubles. So if your head weighs around ten pounds when it’s sitting right on top of your spine, that load can feel like twenty or thirty pounds to the muscles and joints holding it up. Over hours, over days, that adds up to real pain.
So here’s what I want you to do. Whether you’re at a work desk or your kitchen table with a laptop — get your screen up to eye level. You shouldn’t have to look down at your monitor. If you’re on a laptop all day, grab a simple stand and pair it with a separate keyboard. That one change alone can make a big difference for your neck and upper back.
Now let’s talk about your lower back. When you sit for long stretches, your lumbar spine — that’s the curve in your lower back — tends to flatten out. That puts pressure on your discs and strains the muscles around them. What you want is to support that natural curve. A small lumbar support pillow behind your lower back works great. And your feet should be flat on the floor, knees roughly at a ninety degree angle. If your chair is too high, grab a footrest. Simple fix, real relief.
Here’s the piece most people skip — and it’s actually the most important. Movement. Your spine is not designed to stay still for hours at a time. It craves movement. The fluid and nutrients that keep your discs healthy actually get pumped in and out through motion. So set a timer. Every thirty to forty-five minutes, stand up, walk around for a minute or two, do a gentle neck roll, take a few deep breaths. That’s it. That habit alone can do more for your spine than almost anything else I can recommend.
Now, working from home has added another layer to this. A lot of folks are on the couch with a laptop, or hunched over a coffee table, or sitting in a dining chair that has zero support. I get it — that’s the reality. But even small adjustments matter. If you’re on the couch, put a firm pillow behind your lower back. Bring your laptop up on a lap desk. Don’t let your chin drop toward your chest for long periods. These aren’t perfect solutions, but they make a real difference over time.
And one more thing — your phone. We’re all on it constantly. Try to bring your phone up to eye level instead of looking down at it. Even five minutes of looking down at a phone puts a lot of stress on your neck. Over the course of a day, that adds up.
Now, if you’re already dealing with neck stiffness, back tension, or that kind of dull ache that just won’t quit — that’s your body asking for some attention. Better ergonomics can slow things down and help you feel better, but it doesn’t replace professional evaluation. Sometimes what’s going on underneath needs a trained eye and a real plan.
That’s exactly what we’re here for at Sarasota Chiropractic and Physical Therapy. We combine chiropractic care and physical therapy under one roof — and we work with you one-on-one, every single visit. We look at the whole picture, not just where it hurts.
So if you’ve been dealing with discomfort that just isn’t going away on its own, don’t wait on it. Call to schedule your appointment. We’re right here in Sarasota, and we’d love to help you get back to feeling like yourself.
