After a car accident, it’s common to focus on vehicle damage, insurance, and everything else that needs immediate attention. But what about your body? Pain, stiffness, headaches, and changes in mobility may develop after the initial impact, and some symptoms may not become noticeable until hours or even days later.
In this episode, we discuss why it’s important to pay attention to how your body feels following a car accident. We’ll cover common concerns such as neck and back pain, whiplash-related symptoms, muscle tension, and reduced range of motion. We’ll also explain how a professional evaluation can help identify areas that may need attention and how chiropractic care may support mobility, comfort, and recovery.
If you’ve recently been involved in a car accident, understanding your symptoms and seeking appropriate care can be an important part of moving forward.
Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Abraham Kozma, and you’re listening to the podcast from Sarasota Chiropractic and Physical Therapy — Sarasota’s integrated auto injury recovery practice. Today I want to talk about something I see all the time in my clinic, and honestly, something that concerns me deeply. We’re talking about what happens when people ignore pain after a car accident.
Now, I get it. You walk away from a crash, you feel a little shaken up, maybe a little sore — but nothing feels broken. You think, okay, I’ll be fine. I just need a day or two of rest. And I understand that instinct completely. But here’s the thing — when it comes to car accident injuries, what you feel in those first hours, or even the first couple of days, does not tell the whole story.
Here’s why. Your body is incredibly smart. The moment you experience trauma — and a car accident, even a low-speed one, is absolutely a physical trauma — your nervous system kicks into high gear. Adrenaline floods your system. Inflammation starts ramping up. And in that state, your body actually masks pain signals. So you might feel okay right after the crash… and then wake up three days later barely able to turn your head. That’s not unusual. That’s actually one of the most common patterns I see.
The injuries that tend to hide like this are soft tissue injuries — things like whiplash, muscle strains, ligament sprains, and disc irritation in the spine. These don’t show up on a quick roadside check. They don’t bleed. They don’t swell in ways you can obviously see. But left unaddressed, they can become chronic problems that follow you for months or even years.
Let me be direct with you. Pain that starts mild and gets ignored has a way of becoming pain that changes your daily life. Stiffness that seems minor can turn into limited range of motion. A nagging headache can become a persistent pattern that disrupts your sleep and your focus. And the longer those underlying injuries go without proper care, the harder they can be to fully resolve.
So what should you actually do? First — even if you feel okay, get evaluated. Not just at the emergency room, which is absolutely the right call if you have serious symptoms, but by a provider who specializes in musculoskeletal injuries from car accidents. That’s exactly what we do here. We’re trained to find the injuries that don’t announce themselves loudly right away.
Second — pay attention to your body in the days following the accident. Neck stiffness, shoulder pain, headaches, low back discomfort, even brain fog or sleep changes — these can all be signs that your body is dealing with more than it showed you initially. Write down your symptoms. Don’t minimize them.
And third — understand that you likely have benefits available to help you. In Florida, your personal injury protection coverage — most people call it PIP — is designed to cover your medical care after an accident, regardless of fault. You have fourteen days from the date of the accident to seek care and activate those benefits. Don’t let that window close.
At Sarasota Chiropractic and Physical Therapy, we’ve been helping accident injury patients since the year two thousand. We bring chiropractic care and physical therapy together under one roof — because healing after a crash isn’t just about reducing pain in the moment. It’s about restoring how your body moves, rebuilding strength, and making sure old injuries don’t become permanent limitations. And every single visit here is one-on-one with your provider. You will never be handed off to someone else or left on your own in a back room.
Here’s the bottom line — car accidents happen. And healing can too. But healing doesn’t happen on its own when there’s a real injury underneath the surface. It happens when you take action, get the right evaluation, and follow a real plan.
If you or someone you know has been in an accident — even a minor one — please don’t wait. Give us a call. Come in and let us take a look. We’re here in Sarasota, we know this process inside and out, and we genuinely want to help you get back to feeling like yourself again.
